Malaysia's Anwar: Sodomy charge aimed to keep me out of Parliament

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - Malaysia's opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim said Monday that he had been about to announce plans to contest a by-election for Parliament when he was hit with a sodomy accusation that has thrown the country's politics into turmoil.

Anwar told reporters that he had planned to announce the details of his plan Tuesday, but that would have to be put off while he dealt with the police complaint made Saturday by a male aide. The 23-year-old aide says Anwar sodomized him last week.

"I (was) supposed to announce my candidacy in a by-election. Well, I can't announce now. This is derailed temporarily," he said.
