General Santos City – City health officials expressed alarm over the rise in the number of malaria cases here.
The latest report said that there were already 33 residents who were diagnosed with malaria in the month of July alone.
City health officer Jacinto Makilang said the virus is brought by the Anopheles mosquito. He explained that these mosquitoes bite during night time unlike the dengue-carrying Aedis Egypti which attacks during daytime.
He said malaria carrier mosquitoes thrive in creeks with clean-flowing water.
Makilang also confirmed that there was already a fatality from Bario Bla-an of Barangay Labangal where most of patients diagnosed with malaria reside.
The city health office have already conducted fogging operations and advised residents to clean their surroundings.
On July of 2005, more than 200 residents of Purok San Ruiz in Barangay Apopong were found positive of malaria. ABS-CBN General Santos City monitored three deaths due to malaria.
