MANILA, Philippines - Congress must conduct an impartial investigation on the Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction Co. and all its subcontractors for the deaths of 14 Filipinos in its facilities, Solidarity Philippines said Monday.
The group made the call following the death of 19-year-old Arvy Mahinay, an employee of Hanjins subcontractor Bodahh Inc., last August 7.
Mahinay, according to reports, died from multiple body injuries and a broken skull when he fell from a roof.
This investigation should be a full congressional hearing, the group said in a statement.
The group also challenged the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority to either suspend or terminate Hanjins land lease agreement to protect the lives of more than 10,000 Filipinos who are working at or involved with the South Korean firms various facilities.
Olongapo City Councilor JC de los Reyes had earlier called for a congressional hearing concerning the exploitative and the cruel treatment of Hanjins Filipino workers at the SBMA. - D'Jay Lazaro, GMANews.TV
