A village councilman died and his three companions were wounded in a landmine explosion in Makilala, North Cotabato, Thursday morning.
Senior Superintendent Lester Camba, North Cotabato police chief, identified the fatality as Ricky Apolinario, chairman of Barangay San Vicente in Makilala town.
Camba said Apolinario and three village watchmen were on board a vehicle when they hit a landmine in Barangay Luna Sur around 6 a.m.
The village official died on the spot. The police have yet to identify the injured victims.
Camba said the victims were on their way to a banana plantation to check information that armed men were harassing its workers.
The police were checking the alleged harassment.
