Explosions hit west Indian city; 20 wounded

AHMADABAD, India - At least 20 people were wounded when a series of small explosions hit the western Indian city of Ahmadabad on Saturday, a day after seven similar blasts struck another city in the south.

"So far our reports indicate that there were 13 or 14 blasts," federal Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta told reporters.

He did not comment on the intensity of the blasts but Indian media said the explosions appeared to be caused by small bombs.

Amit Shah, the junior home minister of Gujarat state where Ahmadabad is located, said that at least 20 people were wounded in the blasts.

Most of the explosions went off in the crowded areas of the older part of the congested city.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for either set of bombings, and it was not clear if they were connected.

Prithviraj Chavan, a junior minister in the prime minister's office, called the explosions "deplorable" and said they were set off by people "bent upon creating a communal divide in the country"
