Qantas jet makes emergency landing in Sydney due to hydraulic leak

SYDNEY, Australia - The pilot of a Manila-bound Qantas jetliner has dumped fuel before making an emergency landing at Sydney Airport after hydraulic fluid began leaking from a wing control mechanism on take off.

A cabin crew union is seeking a meeting with airline management over the latest mid air scare that came eight days after an explosion blew a hole in the fuselage of a Qantas Boeing 747 en route from London to Australia.

Air safety authorities say a Boeing 767 with 200 passengers on board took off from Sydney in the early Saturday afternoon and spent 100 minutes in the sky dumping fuel as a precaution before landing at the same airport.

A Qantas spokesman who spoke on condition of anonymity which is company policy said "there was no safety issue at any time." - AP
