Classes in 3 Malabon, Navotas elem schools suspended

Classes in three elementary schools in Malabon and Navotas were suspended Monday due to heavy floods.

Teresita Domalanta, director of the Department of Education National Capital Region, announced the suspension of classes in Dampalit Elementary School and Dampalit 1 Elementary School in Malabon and Tanza Elementary School in Navotas.

The National Disaster Coordinating Council said it is leaving it up to local government units to decide whether to suspend classes in their respective areas.

Heavy downpour drenched parts of Metro Manila and Luzon as tropical depression Julian hit the country.

Weather bureau PAGASA hoisted public storm warning signal No. 1 over Batanes Group of Islands, Babuyan Group of Islands, Calayan Group of Islands, Northern Cagayan, Apayao, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Abra and La Union.

As of 4 a.m. Monday, Julian was spotted 130 kilometers north northwest of Aparri, Cagayan, or 110 km south southwest of Basco, Batanes.

It has maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour near the center. The storm was moving west at 17 kph.

PAGASA said the storm is expected to enhance the southwest monsoon and bring rains over Luzon especially in the western sections.
