MANILA, Philippines - Six Catholic priests were among those held captive by the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) Monday when it attacked Kolambugan town in Lanao del Norte.
The priests however were able to escape after spending almost half a day with the rebels, according to Dipolog Bishop Jose Maguiran.
Maguiran identified the victims as Fathers Isagani Josol, Cris Varquez, Bryan Lumentac, Salvador Salim, Lito Buot and Rannie Sarita.
Maguiran said the priests were on their way to Davao City to attend an alumni homecoming when the secessionist rebels flagged down the bus they were riding and took them as captives.
The priests are currently staying inside the Dipolog Cathedral. Maguiran said he is scheduled to meet them Tuesday afternoon.
The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), meanwhile, condemned the abduction of the priests, saying they are not part of the armed conflict in Mindanao.
"We condemn that (abduction of priests)," said Jaro Archbishop Angel Lagdameo, the CBCP president.
The prelate also appealed to the warring parties - the MILF and government forces - "to be instrument of the peace process that it be achieved in Mindanao.” - GMANews.TV
