Govt to give out more than 111,000 access cards in Negros Occ

More than 111,000 poor families in Negros Occidental are set to receive access cards from the National Food Authority and the Department Social Welfare and Development, said an official from the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO).

PSWDO officer Liane Garcia explained that they have already identified who are set to receive the access cards who will be given priority in the purchase of government rice from the National Food Authority (NFA) sold at P18 to P25 a kilo.

"Every NFA’s Tindahan Natin outlet has 250 consumers. There are 445 Tindahan Natin outlets in the province," Garcia said.

The social welfare office said once the access cards are handed out, only the bearers can buy Vietnam rice which is being sold at P18 to P25 per kilo.

Non-access card holders can only buy Thai rice sold in major markets in the province at P25 a kilo.

Commercial rice prices meanwhile are gradually going down as the demand for government rice has continuously increased. Commercial rice is now sold at P40 to P43 a kilo.

The NFA is expected to dispose 160 thousand sacks of government rice this month. With a report from Ragie Mae Tano-Arellano, ABS-CBN Bacolod
