ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - An ally of President Pervez Musharraf says talks are under way to avoid impeachment for the embattled Pakistani leader.
Tariq Azim, a top official in the main pro-Musharraf party, says the talks could lead to a dignified exit for the former army chief. Azim says discussions include guarantees that he will avoid charges.
Azim says another option is a deal whereby the presidency is stripped down to a figurehead position.
An impeachment motion is expected to be brought to Parliament as early as next week.
Musharraf has dominated Pakistan for years after seizing power in a 1999 coup. His rivals won February parliamentary elections and have sought to push him out. - AP
