MILF says its commitment to peace in Mindanao stays

MANILA, Philippines - The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) assured the government of its commitment to peace despite "setback" in the proposed pact on Bangsamoro homeland claim.

On Monday, the high court ruled to stop the scheduled signing of the final draft on the ancestral domain agreement, which was supposed to be signed Tuesday by the government and the MILF.

MILF spokesman Eid Kabalu said what is needed at this time is just an explanation of the agreement to the parties concerned.

Our commitment for a peaceful resolution to the problem remains. This (SC ruling) may be a setback but we cannot be stopped, Kabalu said in Filipino in an interview on DZBB.

He said that as far as the MILF is concerned, the "negotiations" are already finished, and it is just waiting for the formal signing of the agreement.

But Kabalu declined to give further comment, saying news of the Supreme Court's temporary restraining order against the agreement has not yet "circulated" among members of the MILF.

"I think more explanation (needs) to be undertaken on the part of the government for people to really understand. Sana ang kanilang pananaw palawakin pa (We hope people will have a wider perspective)," he said.- GMANews.TV
