Suspected Reds torch Globe relay station in Rizal

Suspected New People’s Army guerillas set fire to a telecommunications relay station in Rizal province Sunday night.

Eyewitnesses said they saw three armed men and a woman break inside the Globe Telecom office in Bagong Bayan, Teresa and plant explosives inside. “I asked them,’ What are you doing there?’ But they told me not to meddle,” said a resident.

The witnesses said they heard an explosion after the break-in. They said the four suspects shouted "Long live the NPA" before fleeting.

Local police said the NPA cut through the station's wire fence and destroyed the building's lock before setting the explosives. The explosion caused a fire, which was quickly put out by residents.

Globe Telecoms management warned that other relay stations in Southern Tagalog may be subjected to attacks by communist rebels.

Globe cell sites are frequently targeted by the NPA after the company refused to pay revolutionary taxes to the communist insurgency. With a report from Niko Baua, ABS-CBN News
