US military flights causing delay in Zambo airport rehab

The operations of the US Joint Special Operations Task Force (JSOTF) is causing a delay in the rehabilitation of the Zamboanga City Airport runway.

Airport manager Celso Bayabos said that there is a standing request from US troops to temporarily suspend an asphalt overlay project since US aircrafts use the runway at night.

Bayabos cited that there is a need to have the runway repaired in the earliest possible time since there are existing holes in it that might damage aircrafts.

President Arroyo had mentioned in her State of the Nation Address July 28 that the rehabilitation of the Zamboanga airport is among her administration's priority projects.

The US JSOTF had earlier said it is conducting training and support operations jointly with the Philippine military in anti-terrorism efforts in Mindanao.
