Ifugao farmers receive land titles

AGUINALDO, Ifugao – After a year-long wait, a total of 94 farmers in this northern province finally received titles to the land they are tilling, the provincial government of Ifugao said on Thursday.

Gov. Teddy Baguilat Jr, assisted by local officials of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Registry of Deeds, distributed the titles to farmer-tillers in Ifugao’s eastern town of Aguinaldo.

June Dumar of the governor’s office said the farmers, mostly rice and corn producers in the remote sitio of Dolowog, paid only P72 each for the survey processing and waited for a yearlong processing by Land Management Officials of the DENR.

“We are fortunate in this province that we have lands to occupy," Baguilat was quoted saying during the distribution ceremony on July 4. “While they have squatters in Manila, we have vacant lots in Ifugao, and that’s a big difference," added by the young governor as he stressed the importance of owning a parcel of land in this corn-farmed part of the province".

Each of the title owners claimed their land’s legal documents, but they are prohibited by the registry of deeds to sale, mortgage, or in any form be transferred to anybody but the title owner for five years. The prohibition was written on the legal land title.

Aguinaldo is one of the top producers of corn in the country, according to Baguilat. - GMANews.TV
