WASHINGTON - The United States says it has "seen the reports and heard the rumors" about Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf's possible resignation but is not commenting on the future of the staunch U.S. ally.
State Department spokesman Robert Wood repeated to reporters Friday the U.S. view that efforts to impeach Musharraf are an internal Pakistani matter.
He says whatever happens should reflect Pakistan's constitution.
A Musharraf ally says talks are under way that could lead to Musharraf's resignation or reduce his role to that of a figurehead.
A spokesman for Musharraf denied he was about to step down.
Political opponents of the president have suggested he could resign within days before an impeachment process that could begin as early as next week. - AP
