Arroyo hints meet with MILF members in Cotabato

MANILA, Philippines - A day after President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo expressed support for a bid to postpone elections in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, she hinted she might meet with some members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front Wednesday.

The proposal to postpone the ARMM elections has stemmed from a clamor for the resumption of peace talks between the Government of the Republic of the Philippines and the MILF.

MILF spokesman Eid Kabalu said Wednesday morning he might join front members in meeting Arroyo when she comes to see volunteers who helped remove water lilies from flooded Cotabato City.

"Hopefully baka makasalimuha natin ang pangulo sa Delta Bridge, kasama ang MILF sa pagtulong sa cleanup sa water lily (Hopefully we can meet with the president at Delta Bridge. The MILF had been joining the cleanup efforts)," Kabalu said in an interview on DZXL.

But he did not say what he would tell Arroyo should they meet.

Kabalu said he was not going with MILF peace negotiators to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia Thursday to review an agreement on the Bangsamoro ancestral domain claim.

Volunteer groups had joined local officials in cleaning the city of water lilies that contributed to the flooding of the city in past weeks.

"Narito tayo sa Cotabato ... Tatlo o apat araw ang ating pagsisikap (We just stay in Cotabato. We've been helping clear the area for three to four days)," he said. - GMANews.TV
