Elem, HS classes suspended in 11 provinces due to 'Julian'

The National Disaster Coordinating Council suspended Monday classes in the elementary and high school levels in 11 provinces due to inclement weather brought on by tropical storm Julian.

Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. said the affected provinces include Batanes, Cagayan, Apayao, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Zambales, Tarlac, Pampanga and Bulacan.

Weather bureau PAGASA announced Monday that tropical depression Julian has developed into a tropical storm as it continues to move westward.

Public storm warning signal No. 1 is still in effect in Batanes Group of Islands, Babuyan Group of Islands, Calayan Group of Islands, Northern Cagayan, Apayao, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Abra and La Union.

As of 10 a.m., Julian was spotted 300 kilometers northwest of Aparri, Cagayan, or 210 km northwest of Laoag City, with maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 80 kph.

The storm was moving west at 19 kph.

Julian is expected to be 320 km west northwest of Laoag City by Tuesday morning and 680 km west northwest of Laoag City by Tuesday evening.
