Storm prompts CL execs to suspend classes

CAMP OLIVAS, Pampanga - Classes Monday in various schools in at least four Central Luzon provinces were suspended by disaster-control officials as tropical storm "Julian" dumped moderate to heavy rains in almost all areas of the region.

This developed as the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC), in its advisory, warned residents in low-lying areas to be alert and prepare for any eventuality brought about by tropical storm "Julian."

The provinces included in the NDCC advisory are Zambales, Bulacan, Pampanga and Tarlac. Classes in various schools in these areas have been suspended due to continuous rains.

The tropical storm was last sighted some 200 kilometers northwest of Laoag City, according to the weather bulletin released by the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical Astronomical Administration (PAGASA). It packed maximum sustained winds of 65 kph.

PAGASA forecast the storm to be 680 kilometers northwest of Laoag by Tuesday night.

The government weather bureau said Julian is expected to enhance the Southwest monsoon and continue to bring more rains over Luzon areas in the next three days.

The local disaster-control officials are closely monitoring the water levels in various major river systems and its tributaries in Central Luzon particularly the flood-prone places in Bulacan, Pampanga and Nueva Ecija.

Except for some low-lying villages in southwestern Pampanga towns no other areas have been flooded in the province as of press time.-Jess Malabanan
