SINGAPORE - Singapore's foreign minister says his Myanmar counterpart has indicated that opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi may be freed from house arrest in six months.
George Yeo says this was suggested during a dinner meeting of foreign ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations on Sunday.
He says Myanmar's minister Nyan Win told the meeting that under his country's laws a political detainee can be held for up to six years. Nyan Win said Suu Kyi has "about half a year's time" left to go.
Asked if that means she could be released at the end of the sixth year, Yeo told reporters "That's not an inaccurate inference."
He says ASEAN expressed its "deep disappointment" over a decision by the junta to extend Suu Kyi's house arrest in June. - AP
