One person was killed and seven others were critically wounded after a trailer truck hit their white Asian utility vehicle (AUV) along C-5 Road in Barangay Ugong, Pasig City Tuesday night.
Killed was Rodrigo Sanglay, who was driving a Toyota Revo. Philip and Ryan Cano, the other AUV passengers, were in critical condition. Four other members of the Cano family, including overseas Filipino worker Paciano Cano, were also hurt.
ABS-CBN correspondent Gretchen Malalad said the Cano family were on their way home to Marikina City around 9 p.m. when they were hit by a trailer truck driven by Ronald Baguhin.
Baguhin's rig was being pulled by two tow trucks of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) when it went loose.
Baguhin said the truck's brakes were broken, making it impossible for him to control the heavy vehicle.
The AUV went under the trailer truck, trapping its driver and the Cano family. It took rescuers six hours before finally pulling out Sanglay's lifeless body.
Cano family members, meanwhile, were also trapped for several hours. They were brought to hospital for treatment.
Members of the Cano family said the MMDA should be held responsible for the tragedy.
The MMDA, meanwhile, said an investigation into the incident is underway to find out who should be held liable.
