Two civilian tipsters of the military have received half a million pesos each for providing information that resulted in the arrest of two alleged communist rebel leaders in Zamboanga Peninsula.
Lt. Gen. Nelson Allaga, commanding general of Armed Forces' Western Mindanao Command, said the P1 million rewards was handed to two tipsters who helped the military arrest Antonio Anding and Gideon Galleposo, suspected operating officers of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP).
Allaga said Anding was arrested by military intelligence operatives in Zone 10, Barangay Balua, Cagayan de Oro City last Aug. 17, 2007. Galleposo, meanwhile, was arrested in Barangay San Jose, Imelda town in Zamboanga Sibugay.
The military official said the military's anti-insurgency campaign in Zamboanga Sibugay has been successful because locals have been cooperating with their intelligence operatives.
He said the military command in Zamboanga is determined to neutralize all communist rebel leaders before 2010, which is President Arroyo's deadline for the military to significantly reduce the CPP's strength.
