Cops kill rob gang suspects in Rizal shootout

Police killed two motorcycle-riding gunmen in an encounter in Cainta, Rizal, before dawn Friday.

Senior Superintendent Ireneo Dordas, Rizal police provincial director, named the slain suspects as Antonio Mentes and Ricardo Animos.

Dordas said Mentes and Animos were killed in an encounter on Hunter's Avenue in Barangay San Juan around 1 a.m.

The police official said the shootout took place after the suspects sped past a police checkpoint on Hunter's Avenue. He said the suspects pulled out their guns and fired at policemen while being chased.

The two died after a brief gunbattle. Recovered from Mentes was a grenade. Animos, meanwhile, had an identification card for an Armed Forces of the Philippines reservist.

Dordas said the suspects could have been members of a syndicate involved in a series of robbery incidents in Rizal province and other areas in Calabarzon.
