Kidnappers free Baselco workers

Agence France-Presse

ZAMBOANGA - Four electricity workers have been freed unharmed two weeks after they were kidnapped by gunmen in the southern Philippines, police said on Friday.

The kidnappers, who police believe are linked to the separatist Moro Islamic Liberation Front guerrilla group, had threatened to kill the men and demanded a ransom of two million pesos (44,000 dollars).

"We don't know if there was a ransom paid for their release, but the kidnappers freed all the hostages unharmed to government emissaries" on the island of Basilan, said provincial police chief, Senior Superintendent Salik Macapantar.

The four Basilan Electric Cooperative Inc. employees were abducted on June 26 along with a fifth, who was freed unharmed after a few days.
