Magnitude 6 earthquake hits Batanes

MANILA, Philippines - A magnitude 6 earthquake rocked Batanes in Northern Luzon late Sunday night although no damage or casualty was reported, state seismology experts said on Monday.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) public information office said the that the quake occurred around 10:58 p.m. on Sunday, with its epicenter estimated some 113 kilometers north and 70 degrees west of Basco, Batanes.

In a separate report, the United States Geological Service (USGS) said a magnitude 4.6 aftershock was subsequently recorded in the island province around 11:46 p.m., with the epicenter traced 120 kilometers northwest of Basco, Batanes.

However, Phivolcs said the aftershock was not plotted by the agency since local officials in Batanes reported that the quake was not felt in the area. - Johanna Camille Sisante, GMANews.TV
