Cebu families agree to settle with Sulpicio Lines

At least three families in Cebu province have agreed to accept the P200,000 financial assistance offered by Sulpicio Lines, Inc. as payment for each individual passenger who perished in the capsizing of the M/V Princess of the Stars on June 21 off Romblon province.

ABS-CBN Cebu chanced upon Nimfa Arco clutching a her 11-month old grandchild as they lined up at the Sulpicio Lines office in Cebu City on Thursday.

According to Arco, the baby's mother and 10-year-old sibling were among the passengers of the ill-fated passenger ferry.

She said that her family will no longer file a case in court against the shipping firm since they are poor and could not pursue the charges.

April Paca and Jesus Carabio echoed Arco's sentiments.

In separate interviews, the two said they would not want to be like relatives of victims of past Sulpicio Lines tragedies who have yet to get justice after filing charges against the shipping giant.

The Princess of the Stars capsized at the height of a storm in Romblon.

Nearly three weeks after the disaster, the vessel has yet to be towed to shore.

At least 860 passengers were on board the ferry when it sailed from Manila on June 20. With a report from Rico Lucena, ABS-CBN Cebu
