The National Food Authority and the Department of Social Welfare and Development is set to start distributing access cards to the poorest of the poor in Bacolod City and Negros Occidental.
Manuel Castanares, NFA provincial assistant manager said the access cards will enable the poor to avail of cheap government rice from NFA’s Bigasan ng Bayan outlets amid the high prices of commercial rice in the market.
Castanares added that if before a consumer was only allowed to buy two kilos of NFA rice sold at P18.25 per kilo, now an access card holder can purchase more than two kilos of government rice.
The DSWD is set to conduct house to house visits to identify families who deserve to have access cards.
The NFA said it sees the need for access cards to ensure that the poor is given priority when it comes to access to government-subsidized rice.
Commercial rice was being sold at P40 to P43 per kilo in the province.
