NPA attacks military posts in Agusan del Sur

Suspected members of the communist armed-wing, New People’s Army, allegedly attacked the Buhisan Patrol Base and the Army’s 24th Infantry Battalion detachment in Agusan Del Sur on Monday.

Unidentified armed men sniped the Army patrol base in San Agustin town at 5 a.m. Monday. They were driven off however to the hinterlands of Sitio Talisay, Barangay Kauswagan when members of the Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit retaliated.

No casualties from both parties were reported in the incident.

Following the assault, 20 suspected rebels allegedly under the Southern Mindanao Regional Committee of the Communist Party of the Philippines and troops from the Army detachment clashed at 10 p.m. Monday in Trento town.

The encounter lasted for twenty minutes after which the suspected rebels withdrew to Sitio Cogonon in Barangay Salvacion.

Reports said that a certain Corporal Renato Cornel was hit in his left leg, but he was immediately brought to a hospital for treatment.

Police said that they have not yet confirmed the number of casualties on the rebel’s side .

Members of Trento Municipal Police Station immediately installed checkpoints within the area for possible apprehension of the alleged NPA members.
