Four-time world boxing champion Manny Pacquiao may have suffered a big blow in his first attempt to join politics in 2007, but this fighter is not just going to throw in the towel without trying again.
Pacquiao, the Filipino boxing icon who does not easily give up a fight, is eyeing politics for the second time so he can further serve the public.
"I have a plan to run of course," Pacquiao, who recently defeated David Diaz for the World Boxing Council lightweight title, said.
He confirmed his plan to run for public office in the 2010 national elections as he undertook typhoon relief operations in the provinces.
Pacquiao visited Iloilo and Bacolod Thursday to personally hand out sacks of relief goods to typhoon-affected residents.
He admitted he is nearing his retirement from boxing, but he is now focused on his next fights.
Pacquiao said he will soon be busy preparing for big fights later this year and in 2009.
"After boxing, nakamit ko na ang lahat ng pangarap ko, so my next goal is naman is to help the poor people," he said.
Pacquiao ran but lost to incumbent Rep. Darlene Magnolia Antonino-Custodio in the congressional race of the First District of South Cotabato in the May 2007 elections.
"Even if I'm not in a position sa politics, I can help, but it's minimal. Not like if you're in a position, you can help a lot," he said.
When asked if he wants to help the poor as a congressman, Pacquiao’s answer was a clear "yes." -- Reports from Dyan Castillejo, TV Patrol World
