Man holds live-in partner hostage

A 32-year-old man was arrested on Thursday for taking her live-in partner as hostage in Pandacan, Manila.

The nabbed suspect was identified as Steve Nilay, and his hostage, Alvina Bariuan.

Police said they responded after the child of Bariuan told them of the hostage incident. However, it did not take long for the police to convince Nilay to release his hostage.

During a confrontation with Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim, Bariuan said that her partner sold her clothes to make money and beat her. She added that when his husband, a Japanese national, sends her money, Nilay takes all the money. She also accused Nilay of detaining her inside the house.

Lim asked the police to put Nilay in Jail and to charge him with grave coercion and illegal detention.

The mayor also requested the police to assist Bariuan and her children, and move them to another place where the suspect can no longer trouble them.
