PNP to step up drive vs power pilferage

MANILA, Philippines - Police have stepped up their drive against power pilferers to help power distributors like the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) from suffering systems losses and passing on the costs to consumers.

Philippine National Police Chief Dir. Gen. Avelino Razon Jr on Thursday evening said he ordered police personnel to watch out for residents making illegal connections.

"Ang PNP handang makipagtulungan sa Meralco at power distributors sa iba't ibang lugar para ang ganitong pilferage and losses nila ma-minimize at di manakaw ang kuryente (The PNP is ready to help Meralco and other power distributors in the provinces to crack down on power thieves and cut down on systems losses)," Razon said in an interview on dzBB radio.

He asked the power distributors and the general public to report cases of pilferage so police can go after the culprits.

Razon also said he has ordered his men to conserve on utilities such as electricity and water, especially during these times.

"Inutos ko ang utmost sa pagtitipid, energy conservation sa paggamit ng kuryente at tubig (I have ordered our personnel to practice energy conservation, especially in the use of basic utilities like electricity and water)," he said. - GMANews.TV
