Business and resort owners in Boracay are not bothered by the fact that they will have to make do with generators for at most two months once the Aklan Electric Cooperative starts upgrading the island's transmission lines.
The Department of Energy (DOE) said Tuesday the cooperative is scheduled to rehabilitate and upgrade the island's power lines since the current set-up is already overburdened, especially during peak season.
The island's peak season is from November to May. Business owners in the island are in favor of the repairs being done during the lean season.
"Pag hindi ginawa, mas magastos dahil sa mga repairs [ng mga sirang] gamit mo. Mas malaki pa gagastusin sa computer kapag masisira," said Boracay Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) president Charles Uy.
Energy Secretary Angelo Reyes, meanwhile, said the timing of repairs is favorable to business owners.
"There are some transformers there particularly the 30 megavolt ampere (MVA) transformers that are needing repair and restoration jobs. So the Aklan [Electric] Cooperative decided that this is the best time to do it since it is a lean month," Reyes said.
Business owners said overburdened lines have caused intermittent blackouts that have caused damage to their appliances and computers.
The daily brownouts are scheduled to take place between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily. While the electric cooperative's service is down, businesses will rely on generators.
The service interruptions will also be done by area, officials said.
The cooperative, meanwhile, said that the repair and upgrade operations might just take 21 days if no problems arise. With a report from Zen Hernandez, ABS-CBN News
